Dreams do come true: My Journey Through Photography

Updated: Jul 11, 2025

The Power of Art and Storytelling

Not too long ago, I had nothing.

I was struggling, homeless at times, surviving domestic abuse and unsure where life would take me. However, deep inside, I had a quiet fire—a love for art and storytelling that never left me. Photography became my dream, even when it felt out of reach.

To survive, I started my own eco-cleaning business. I worked hard, waking up early and putting in long hours. I saved every bit I could. All of this was with one goal in mind: to study photography at TAFE. That was the beginning of everything for me.

Discovering My Voice Through Photography

Learning photography gave me more than just technical skills. It gave me back my voice. It allowed me to reconnect with who I am as a Noongar/Yamatji woman. Now, I use my camera to document community, culture, and connection. I’ve had the privilege of working with Elders, cultural groups, and organizations that recognize the power in visual storytelling.

Starting my own photography business has been one of the proudest and hardest things I’ve ever done. I’ve received wonderful support and had some incredible opportunities along the way. But I’m still learning.

Navigating the Business Side of Photography

I am learning how to manage the business side: how to chase work, set fair prices, and stay afloat between gigs. One of the hardest challenges has been getting paid on time. It can be frustrating, but I’m not giving up. I’ve come too far, and I believe in what I’m building. I am immensely grateful to those who continue to support me.

Ways You Can Support My Journey

If you’d like to help me grow and support black women in business here are a few simple things that truly make a difference:

  • Credit me when you share my photos. Tagging me helps new people find me.

  • Tell people about me. Word of mouth is powerful and can extend my reach.

  • Pay me on time. Every dollar helps keep me going and thriving.

  • Follow and like my work on social media. Visibility is key to sustaining my business.

Looking Ahead

I’m proud of where I’ve come from, and I’m even more excited for what lies ahead. From having nothing to capturing everything that matters, my journey has been remarkable.

Thank you for walking beside me.

Robyn Jean

We acknowledge the traditional custodians throughout Western Australia and their continuing connection to the land, waters and community. We pay our respects to all members of the Aboriginal communities and their cultures; and to Elders both past and present.
