5 tips to taking amazing mobile camera photos.

Writer: Robyn JeanRobyn Jean

We all love our mobile phones, myself included. They have revolutionised the way we communicate, collect data including food we eat, clothes we wear and places we see.

Let's face it, we can't go a day without them! People ask me if their phone is a good way to take photos at events such as weddings. If your smartphone is new then absolutely yes. The lens and capabilities are as good as a basic camera, sometimes even better. If you struggle to get that good photo here are 5 things you can do to help you get the best photo.

Please note, for the purpose of this blog I decided to use my lego to explain the tips.

  1. Photograph with a clean lens. It is so easy carrying your phone to smudge the lens. When you take your first shot look at the image to see if it is clear of blur or dirt. It takes 2 seconds and will guarantee you a better image.

2. Look for the light. If you are photographing people and the sun is behind them position yourself so that the sun is not glaring out the subject. Asking people to move into the shade so they are not squinting helps. If you are in a building look for where the light is coming in windows, doors and make use of the light by positioning the person. When photographing the landscape, early morning or just before sunset will give you some epic shots.

Think about your environment when shooting
Gentle light around the subject is good, If you have too much sun/light it can blow out your image

3. Frame it simply. Use the grid option on your camera, this will help you to create a well balanced image. Make sure the main subject is in the frame and in focus. Make sure the horizon is straight and is not running through the head of the person.

4. Move around. Have you seen a professional photographer almost hanging out of a tree or lying in the dirt to get that perfect shot? This may seem extreme but if you want to have photos different to others or capture something really cool try sitting down, standing on a ladder, going up the stairs to photograph down and visa versa. We don't want you hanging off a cliff or swimming in shark infested waters to get those shots tho, please be mindful and safe always.

5. Try editing features on the phone to create black and white, saturated colour, edit out the background. Have fun with photography, share your pics on social media and enjoy the reaction from your friends.

use different colours
Be creative with the apps on your phone.

If you have any lego photos from your phone I would love to see them.
